With a focus on precision and providing a faithful representation of the original source text, straightforward translation is often utilized for more technical materials, including legal and compliance, pharmaceutical, and instructional copy. With an increase in access to automatic and machine translations, it’s easy to assume that brands can get away with using these methods to adapt their less creative content. However, as these categories are typically highly sensitive and rich with technical terms, it is important to utilize human translators who are specialized in these areas and able to fully analyze the source, confirming the accuracy of the adapted text.

At Tag Localization, we use technology to supplement and strengthen the workflow of our highly experienced human translators. Our Tag Translation Platform (TTP) translation memory tool keeps a record of all of our translations to date, separated per brand and per market, to ensure a centralized workflow, maintain consistency, and provide cost savings from project to project. The platform can accommodate any market and an unlimited number of workflows, allowing us to seamlessly adapt to any given project’s requirements.

Working with medical translations, we often encounter translation requests that require certain additional expertise. Since 2014, we have partnered with one pharmaceutical client on hundreds of projects. Our most frequent partnerships operate within the realm of ecommerce collateral, both print and digital. These projects range from clinical trials to branded content, including internal HR communications.

As the tone of voice for this client varies based on brand, product, context, and usage, we developed several process guidelines to guarantee consistency, quality, and accuracy of the translated text. This system includes the following standards:

  • Translations are completed by medically trained, in-market linguists who have been rigorously tested.
  • Stringent review processes are built into each workflow to confirm accuracy, including important details such as copyrights, trademarks, and dosage equivalents.
  • Partnership with account managers to ensure legal compliance within translated copy.
  • Multi-step artwork review process to guarantee that final translated assets are free from error and meet all necessary legal requirements.
  • Certificates of translation are completed and delivered along with every file to guarantee legitimacy.

For this pharmaceutical company, we also implemented a Local Client review step. This gives internal in-market employees an opportunity to review and approve our final translations ahead of releasing into each market. Working directly into TTP, they are free to make any necessary adjustments to the text, based on their knowledge of brand-specific terms and internal translation conventions. This process provides an added layer of accuracy and consistency within internal and external communications. Once approved, adjustments are saved and updated in the TTP Translation Memory and used in all communications moving forward.

In sustained collaboration on a wide variety of projects, we have worked hard to build an expansive translation memory for this particular pharmaceutical client, which contains 300,000 translation entries, spanning over 30 markets. The content contained in this database is reliable and adaptable, permitting us to deploy the translations across a variety of platforms, keeping branding and consistency at the forefront.
